Protectors of the street, or just minding their own business

Saw this today on my way to Denise Pelletier’s talk at Emily Carr (more on that later). I have no idea who the artist is and what it is for; I only know that there are four of them at the intersection under the Granville bridge going into Granville Island and my roommate Sean told me that this has popped up along Granville Street as well. I should probably check it out too.

2008-05-13 update: I was pwned, it’s a Vespa viral promotion, according to computerlove.

Extreme papercraft

What makes this work stand out is that it’s actually done in Blender first to get the digital layout so it’s easily reproducible (well, easier).  According to Bert Simons, “building a piece like this takes about 6 hours, cutting, folding and coloring the edges before glueing.”  More process images after the jump.
