Rendering is hard

June 25th, 2008 | by derrick, product, technical

Here’s some images of a product line I have been working on for a little while.  Looks like I do need to take classes to be better at rendering products.  Anyone knows a free raytrace/render program?  I have tried Blender 3D with YAFRAY and I didn’t like it too much because of the interface…

detail of the shoes

It’s pretty much a given that rapid prototyping will become rapid manufacturing soon enough.  Still, it’s amazing to see what it can actually do even now (see self-replicating machines) .

My head is spinning

May 27th, 2008 | technical

When I read about this process my head starting spinning.  Being able to produce ceramic work using rapid prototyping/manufacturing process creates so many possibilities for ceramics as a medium but it can potentially take away its appeals as well… And then my thought wandered towards what kind of ceramic products could be manufactured this way and then to the technical side of the the process like how much heat can be applied to the powder to make it actually vitrified…  Like I say, my head was spinning and thoughts went wild.

And then I realized that this to an extent means what I learned in school is very much obsolete in the near near future.  That depresses me a little.

For those who care, please follow through to read more about the project.  It’s actually quite interesting.

what is creacrete?

May 2nd, 2008 | technical

Creacrete is a concrete based material which is highly dense making it possible to create filigree and thin-walled objects out of concrete. Unlike usual ceramics, Alexa uses the novel aesthetics of Creacrete for the design of tableware. Special processing makes it possible to achieve this glossy surface which is new to concrete. A nano-scale coating makes the cups and plates hydrophobic and food safe.

Cool! I would love to apply my mold-making and casting skill to this material if it’s doable in a small studio setting, but I guess the nano-scale coating makes it unlikely.

dezeen has a good article with more images so I would recommend you go there to check it out.  However, as one of the comments pointed out, Joe Colombo had something similar (and better) 30 years ago for Oluce.  You can see the Oluce light here and determine if it is indeed more elegant yourself.

Pointers from Bartek Mejor

April 23rd, 2008 | sculpture, technical

A little while ago I featured Bartek Mejor’s work here and was very impressed with how technically well executed his pieces are. I sent him some questions and he was kind enough to reply. If you like to get some pointers to how to make good ceramic cast like his work, read on! Read more »

I can’t quite put my finger on it

April 2nd, 2008 | furniture, technical

I sort of have an idea of a possible manufacturing process (I assume it is acrylic) that can do this, but to mass-produce it?  If I find out more from my friends in the field, I’ll leave it in the comment section.  Jump to see two more images. Read more »

Can I have this filter?

Segmentation and Symptom (2000: Golan Levin) A series of portraits, created for the British arts quarterly Zoo. Custom computational techniques were created to produce a delicate treatment of the subjects, resembling the filigree of a spider’s web.
