Sounding Retreat (2008) by Linda Sormin
Ceramics & mixed media installation at Washington State University, Pullman, WA.
Linda was the teacher that got me interested in ceramics when I attended Emily Carr a couple of years ago. Her website just went live and you should go check it out.

I think the work is beautiful and I love it; however, I don’t feel that the furniture needs to be animated and taking on animal-like characteristics for this work to be successful. I would like to hear what you think.
More images after the jump.

Jahan Loh is currently having a show in Taipei’s Ming Art Gallery. I am definitely thinking Takashi Murahami’s My Lonesome Cowboy and its cool 13.5 mil price tag when I see this work. It is a very good work but I could do without the paintings in the background. Follow to see images and, more importantly, links. Read more »

Saw this today on my way to Denise Pelletier’s talk at Emily Carr (more on that later). I have no idea who the artist is and what it is for; I only know that there are four of them at the intersection under the Granville bridge going into Granville Island and my roommate Sean told me that this has popped up along Granville Street as well. I should probably check it out too.
2008-05-13 update: I was pwned, it’s a Vespa viral promotion, according to computerlove.

I searched around for more information on this work and couldn’t find much more than a name (Nele Azavedo), the same image on different blogs, and an youtube video. I wish I knew the language spoken in the video to know more about this work. For now, jump to see the video.

We all know about global warming, and many of us are working together to remedy the situation. 50graus’ installation is simple and to the point, which is elegant in its execution.
However, it is somewhat baffling to me that people need to see how climate change can affect penguins, whereas all the reports on how climate change can affect human lives fall on deaf ears. This is by no means criticizing 50graus’ artistic choice, but a commentary to what seems to be effective to gather people’s attention. (sort of reminds me of the public outrage towards the puppy-throwing soldier, while there are much bigger problems on hand… ) But I digress, photos and links after jump.
