Tree House (2006) by Jeremy Hatch (porcelain, 9′x11′x11′)
I was going through my posts and realized that I had not posted about this work. Because it was such a technical feat and I learned a great deal from it, and because I contributed (in some small way - helping make the molds) to this project, it is very special to me. Jump to read more and see more photos.
One thing I remember the most is the mold for the tree trunk. It is a 40+ piece mold that weights 300+ pounds without slip that Jeremy made all in his garage/studio. At the time I was a co-op student without prior experience mold-making experience, seeing this monster of a mold was awe-inspiring. As a reference, if you take a mold-making class in ECIAD (ECUAD now), you can probably do a 5-piece mold with some minor problems after 4 months.

Close up

detail - You can really see the detail on the tree branch. Most of the molds for the branch are between 7-8 piece mold, and took Jeremy about 2-3 days to make. (And I made the molds for some of the boards.)

with Jeremy Hatch - You can get a sense of the real size for the tree. I have always half-joked that his mold pieces should also be exhibited as well since they are so well finished and clean that they are all works of art in itself. Too bad that I don’t have photos to show and prove my point…

*minor quibble - the personal website/portfolio needs a bit of upgrade.
